About the Teacher


Born in Holguin, Cuba, Mauricio Herrera Tamayo is a Drummer, Percussionist, Vocalist and Educator with over 25 years of professional experience. Taking his first musical steps with the violin at the age of 7, he began studying percussion by the age of 14; graduating from the Jose Maria Ochoa Conservatory in Holguin and moving to La Habana to broaden his horizons, where he played, toured, and recorded with Cuba’s greatest artists.

Mauricio is currently based in New York City pursuing numerous recording and performance projects. He has played, recorded and toured with: David Sanchez, Stefon Harris, Nicholas Payton Christian Scott, Lila Downs, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Richard Bona, Manuel Valera and the New Cuban Express, Alfredo de la Fe, Bryan Lynch, Luis Perdomo, Ignacio Berroa, Steve Coleman & Five Elements, Jacky Terrasson, Lew Soloff, Marc Ribot, Candido Camero, Yerba Buena, Robby Ameen featuring Ruben Blades, Yosvany Terry Afrocuban Roots and many others. click here for full Bio.

Teaching Style


Mauricio has been an educator at multiple Music Conservatories and has taught Master Classes in several prestigious universities like Berkley and Harvard. His style of teaching uses skills learned in both, the music field as well as the Conservatory. He provides strong cultural awareness, musical sensitivity and technical ability in a nurturing and affirming environment. Emphasis is placed on technique fundamentals, awareness of sound, reading music, and ear training. PRIVATE LESSONS


Traditional one-on-one available for those ready to commit to more formal study. All lessons are student-driven to meet your individual needs and interests. Students work to develop greater in-depth understanding and facility on the instruments and topics of their choosing.  Regardless of your interest, we will work with you to design a course of study to best help you reach your goals.

GROUP LESSONS


Group lessons are offered in small group format whenever possible.  Group lessons are designed to allow multiple students to experience learning and performing together while developing a lesson plan to keep track of their individual progress. This format includes special tuition rates depending on the number of students in each session. The more students, the better the price per class.

MASTER CLASSES


Master Classes offer a condensed learning experience for everyone. The difference between workshops and master classes is typically the set-up; classes being the more informal of the two. Mauricio has taught Master Classes in several prestigious universities like Berkley and Harvard.
